Participant Terms, Conditions
& Code of Conduct

Welcome to the Scary Strangers community. We are fiercely committed to creating a space of radical freedom, creative release, and unshakeable self-belief. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for behaviour that undermines the psychological or physical safety of our community.

By booking a ticket, registering for a class, workshop, festival event, or entering our venues, you (the "Participant") agree to be bound by the Participant Terms, Conditions & Code of Conduct.

1. Code of Conduct

By participating, you explicitly agree to:

  • Prioritise Support:
Actively support your fellow improvisers. We celebrate bold choices and leave judgment, heckling, and ego outside.

  • Be Inclusive and Kind:
Treat all participants, facilitators, venue staff, and audience members with absolute respect, regardless of background, identity, or skill level.

  • Respect Consent and Boundaries:
Improvisation and Comedy require trust. You must respect the physical, verbal, and emotional boundaries of your fellow participants instantly and without question, both on and off stage.

  • Follow Facilitator Direction:
Cooperate fully with the instructions of our facilitators and stage managers.

Breach of Conduct: Scary Strangers reserves the absolute right to refuse entry, cancel registration, or immediately remove any participant whose behaviour is deemed unsafe, disruptive, elitist, or inappropriate. In accordance with Australian Consumer Law, if you are removed for a breach of this Code of Conduct, you forfeit your ticket/tuition fee, and no refund will be provided.

2. What You’re Signing Up For

Our workshops, community jams, and shows are playful, collaborative environments designed to build confidence, foster laughter, and stretch your comfort zone.

  • Voluntary Participation:
All participation is 100% voluntary. You have the absolute right to step out of any game, exercise, or scene at any time without explanation or penalty.

  • Punctuality:
Doors open 15 minutes before sessions. To protect the safety and focus of the group ensemble, late entry may not be permitted once a workshop has commenced at the discretion of the facilitator/event producer.

3. Health, Safety & Assumption of Risk

Improv involves physical movement, group interaction, and spontaneous emotional expression.

  • Personal Responsibility:
You acknowledge that participation involves inherent risks, including minor physical strain or temporary emotional discomfort. You are solely responsible for your own physical and mental well-being.

  • Limits & Disclosure:
You agree to participate strictly within your own physical and psychological limits. You must inform facilitators before the session of any injuries, medical conditions, or accessibility requirements that may impact your participation.

  • Limitation of Liability:
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Scary Strangers, its directors, and its facilitators are not liable for any personal injury, emotional distress, loss, or property damage arising from your participation. Nothing in this clause excludes, restricts, or modifies your rights under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth) or the Australian Consumer Law.

4. Venue Rules & Lawly Mobility

You agree to respect the physical spaces that host our community. You must follow all venue rules, local council signage, and staff directions. Please exercise reasonable care when moving through historical or shared venue spaces, including stairwells and entryways.

5. Intellectual Property & Recording Policy

  • Our Content:
All workshop structures, curriculum designs, branding, and festival materials remain the exclusive intellectual property of Scary Strangers.

  • No Participant Recording:
To ensure a safe environment where people can fail joyfully without fear of public scrutiny, audio or video recording of workshops or classes by participants is strictly prohibited.

  • Promotional Media:
Scary Strangers may take photographs or video footage during sessions/shows for promotional purposes. By attending, you grant Scary Strangers an ongoing, royalty-free, worldwide right to use this media for marketing. If you do not wish to be photographed or filmed, inform the facilitators before the session begins, and your choice will be fully respected.

6. Festival, Event Cancellations & Refund Policy

All bookings are processed in accordance with the Australian Consumer Law.

  • Change of Mind:
In line with standard live entertainment practices, refunds or transfers are not provided for change of mind, scheduling conflicts, or personal absences.

  • Force Majeure & Event Changes:
Scary Strangers reserves the right to alter the lineup, venue, or schedule of any event due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., extreme weather, artist illness, or venue issues).

  • Cancellations:
If an event or class term is fully cancelled by Scary Strangers and cannot be rescheduled, you will be issued a full refund or credit transfer in accordance with your consumer guarantees.

7. Contact & Reporting

If anything feels off, unsafe, or unsupportive at any point during a session, or if you wish to report a boundary breach confidentially, please speak to your facilitator immediately or email us at hello@scarystrangers.com.
